2/17/2008 Rescuers hone their Ice Rescue Skills

Imagine that you've decided to take advantage of a gorgeous winter day to go ice-skating on a frozen lake, when without warning the ice begins to groan and crack beneath your feet. Now what?

That's exactly the kind of scenario that rescuers from Northeast Search and Rescue and Pocono Search and Rescue were training to deal with on Saturday. They spent the afternoon on a partially frozen Wigwam Lake in BStroud Township practicing their ice rescue skills. Rescuers wearing water-tight suits swam around and clawed their way across thin ice to rescue a hapless ice fisherman all in the name of preparedness. According to Bruce Barton, Chief of NESAR, this winter's back and forth temperature changes has left the condition of the area's ice uncertain to say the least. He offered some advice for anyone caught in a bad situation on thin ice. "If you start hearing the ice crack, lay down and spread out your arms and legs to distribute your weight across a larger area of ice, then roll away from the crack towards the shoreline". He also added that children should always be supervised by an adult when ice skating.

1/12/2008 Civil Air Patrol Drill-Quakertown Airport:

"Early this morning the Civil Air Patrol invited emergency response teams to a mock search and rescue mission. The units brushed up on their rescue strategies by land, air and K-9. As WFMZ's Dwayne Parker tells us, the big lesson at runthrough was teamwork.

These rescuers are not leaving one branch unturned. We're looking for a lost hunter. He was over at Knocks State Park and he was last seen on Thursday, on January 11th. Nockamixon State Park was were the subject was last scene. We're going to move our troops to that location. .. 379er, this is mission base over, ...click. T.J. It happens year after year, you have hunters that go out who think they're prepared for the elements, and Murphy's law usually kicks and accident happen. They're also searching by air.. We have both ground teams and the Air Search and Rescue dogs, you know, we're called periodically for ground searches like this.

But this is only a drill. What we have is a training exercise today with different search and rescue teams throughout the eastern part of the State. Members of nearby rescue teams showed up early at the Quakertown Airport to take part in the mock rescue conducted by the Civil Air Patrol. Major Dave Hege says these encounters allow the groups to practice together in non- emergency situations. Allows us to check the inner operability with our two-way radios and also our team structure. Major Hege believes there's a fundamental lesson that all the rescues take from this runthrough The whole key is to train and to work together as one functional team. And to try to save everyone from hunters to skiers to whomever else finds themselves in need of a search team".
